Find Your Greatness

WEEKEND RECAP
Oooh-pah! Our cumulative weekend mileage is steadily increasing. On Saturday 30 walkers tackled two 9 mile loops with a mighty fine lunch break in-between. Making the walk two loops psychologically somehow makes it seems like the 18 miles is not as long. Don’t get me wrong... it is a long day and everyone did great!

We walked thru the newly renovated El Polin Spring, The Conservatory of Flowers, walk through Golden Gate Park on JKF Drive, out along the Coastal Trail beyond the Golden Gate Bridge, UP Lincoln Blvd by Baker Beach. The overcast day made for easier walking! We were so blessed to have route support provided by Connie with an array of snacks and beverages - THANK YOU Connie!

Sunday's walk was further afield, on the very pretty Sawyer Camp Trail with Hillcrest Blvd! Marcia led the group of approximately 12 walkers (THANK YOU Marcia!) and the great thing about this multi-use paved trail is each walker can decide how far to walk. Everyone had a great time walking in the early morning enjoying the scenery and wildlife. The trail is 12 miles out and back BUT if you add in a walk down Hillcrest Blvd the day is a total of 15 miles!

Wooohooo everyone on an amazing weekend!

WEEKEND RECAP
What a doozie of a walking weekend with 24 miles of heat and hills all over San Francisco. I say my training walks are on pavement, footpaths, hills, stairs, trails and to pack your sense of adventure... this weekend I delivered all of the above!

Saturday we met at the Bryant Street Sports Basement and it was hot even at 9am. We walked in an amazing 12 mile loop that took us over Potrero Hill, up & around Bernal Heights Park, through the Glen Park neighborhood, a steady climb UP O'Shaughnessy Hill Blvd., down along Portola, over Kite Hill, onward through the Castro to Dolores Park and into the Mission.
The highlight of Saturday's route was a site visit to the Charlotte Maxwell Complimentary Clinic! They provide FREE alternative medical treatments to over 800 low-income women with cancer each year. CMCC offers relief from the terrible side effects of cancer and its treatments — pain, nausea, fatigue, loss of appetite — and enhance the immune systems and the quality of life of its clients. They offer Bodywork, Chinese and Western herbs, a food pantry, transportation and end-stage home care,
CMCC Executive Director, Krista Alderson, tells us about CMCC
Western and Chinese Herb Pharmacy provided for no cost to clients
Sunday was another sunny, sunny day and we took full advantage by walking up Arguello Blvd. out of the Presidio, through the ever changing NOPA neighborhood, up to Glen Park, zig zagging our way over the Randall Museum. We walked around the Corona Heights Parks with its craggy rocks and back down the trail on the backside - who knew there were challenging trails like this smack in the middle of the city! To cap our hilly adventurous weekend we walked up and over the hills of Divisadero for our grand finale.

WEEKLY INSPIRATION - WHAT WE ARE
In the past few weeks members of our community have expressed concerns regarding comments posted on Facebook, emails and feelings of tension between people participating in various events. Some people have been staying away from training walks due to the negativity. I wanted to take this opportunity to remind everyone "What We Are.”

We are a community of kind and caring people who have come together to make a difference in the lives of people with breast cancer by participating in breast cancer fundraising walks. We are welcoming and all-inclusive. Our community is an incubator of positivity, compassion and kindness. We foster a safe place where powerful relationships with other women can florish. We see possibility all around us.

We are not a community of negativity. Remember our credo: "No whining."  Negativity keeps us from helping one another to shine: to train without injury, to make life-long friends from among strangers, to raise lots of money for breast cancer, and to push beyond our self-imposed limits.

Let's support one another's efforts without reserve because we are all working toward the same goal of a world without breast cancer as a life threatening disease; we are just taking different paths to get there.

ONWARD! We have important work to do!

WEEKEND RECAP
Saturday's 16 mile training walk route is a keeper! We walked places I have never been even though I grew up in SF. When we started walking it was socked in drippy, wet fog and cccold at the Arguello Gate of the Presidio but it did not dampen our spirits at all! We started by heading out on Argullo on through GG Park, out to the Sunset via 9th and Irving. Then we walked up Stanyan Street and then around Sutro Tower on the Historic Trail which was magical (and muddy) enveloped in fog.
From there we pushed on to Portola Dr. and down through the hidden gem Glen Canyon Park (well, hidden to me until today.) After a bit of a hiccough in navigating the route, we walked back across town through Noe Valley, the Castro, Duboce Park, the Panhandle, the Conservatory of Flowers and then we headed, like cows to the barn, back up Arguello! Today's route will forever be nicknamed "The Grocery Route" because our breaks were at Andronico's, Mollie Stones/Tower Market and Whole Foods! We heart snacks.
Sunday's walk was such a treat! We had Juliana Cochnar, Development Manager, and Stephanie Gee, Board Member, of at the Breast Cancer Emergency Fund join us on our 12 mile walk. We walked UP the Chestnut Stair and down curvy Lombard, then UP to Coit Tower, down the Greenwich & Filbert St stairs and on to the Ferry Plaza. Then we walked - for the first time ever - down super urban Howard Street through SOMA... to our second break at the Breast Cancer Emergency Fund offices where we were greeted by staff with snacks.
It was such an inspiring visit. We learned about its history, what they do, where their funding comes from and who their clients are. What an incredible place! BCEF serves 450 low-income people each year with emergency funds for basic living expenses: essential utilities, housing expenses, uninsured medical expenses, basic nutrition and funeral expenses. They had signs up in the office, "Every penny counts!" That is a message we can all take to heart as we continue to fundraise knowing our efforts truly help the under-served.

WEEKLY INSPIRATION
I have been thinking a lot lately about personal truth; what it is to be "true" to yourself, to speak your truth and live out your truth in action and deed. No one else knows your truth. No one can give it to you or tell you what your truth should be. No one can diminish your truth.

Your truth is new, each moment of every day. Your truth can change too! For me, one way to be in your truth is by following your heart, listening to the soft whispers of your intuition, taking heed of the feelings in your gut, speaking with integrity and living honestly - all of that good stuff that can happen when we step off the ferris wheel of busy, modern living. You don't have to "keep up with the Jonses", keep up with yourself!

When we live presently and fully in our truth, it honors all of the people we encounter in our lives. It rubs off in a positive way, leaving this world a little "sparkelier." We feel joy, beauty, peace and calm when we are living our truth. Continually re-calibrate your internal compass to learn your personal truth and be able to live it!

10 REASONS TO NEVER GIVE UP From http://inspirinquotes.tumblr.com/
1. As long as you are alive, anything is possible. The only valid excuse you have to give up is if you are dead. As long as you are alive (and healthy and free) you have the choice to keep trying until you finally succeed.
2. Be realistic. The chance of mastering something the first time you do it is almost non-existent. Everything takes time to learn and you will make mistakes. Learn from them.
3. You are strong. You are stronger than you think. One little setback is not enough to stop you from achieving your goals. Neither are 10 or 100 or 1000 setbacks.
4. Prove yourself. You don’t want to be known as someone that is weak and gives up. Go out there and prove yourself to the world and to yourself. You CAN and WILL achieve what you set out to do. The only time you fail is when you give up.
5. Believe in your dreams. Don’t sell yourself short. In life there are going to be many people who will try to bring you down and tell you what you want to achieve is not possible.
6. Your family and friends. Let the people you love and who mean the world to you be your inspiration to persist and persevere. Maybe you need to try a different angle, study more or practice more but don’t give up!
7. There are people worse-off. Right now there are many people who are in a worse situation and environment than you are. Are you thinking about giving up running 5 miles a week? Think about the people who are unable to even walk and how much they would give to be able to run 5 miles every day.
8. You deserve to be happy. Don’t ever let anybody tell you otherwise. You deserve to be happy and you deserve to have success. Keep that mindset and never give up until you reach your destination!
9. Inspire others. Be an inspiration to others by refusing to give up. Who knows what someone else can achieve because you never gave up and in turn inspired them not to give up.
10. You are so close. Often when you feel like you want to give up you are so close to making a huge breakthrough. You are just a heartbeat away from success.

The Anatomy of Walking

WEEKEND RECAP
Saturday's walk route to Tank Hill & the Vulcan Stairs was selected in honor of the end of training for the Avon walkers (and it is Jenny G's favorite walk!) We started by walking through the AIDS Memorial Grove in Golden Gate Park which is such a beautiful, serene and sacred place.
Atop Tank Hill, from Trina
Although the normal 300 degree view on the top of Tank Hill was pretty obscured by fog, but it was still a great climb and we had amazing views out toward Potrero, SOMA and the Bay Bridge. (Did you know that until 1957 Tank Hill had a water tank? Hence, the name!)
The Vulcan Stairs, from Trina
The Vulcan Stairs are such a gem hidden off of 17th Street – storybook houses and gorgeous gardens line the steep stairway.

It was another fabulous walk and a terrific way for the Avon Walkers to cap their training season
SF in summertime
On Sunday 15 super hearty walkers the first "trail walk" of the year. We hiked the Coastal Trail from Ft Baker to Pt Bonita Lighthouse and back on a very foggy morning. We headed out on the trail in white out fog which pretty much remained all day (somewhat of a blessing with the LARGE hill climbs we had.) We walked up and over toward the Marin Headlands Visitor Center, then around the lagoon to Rodeo Beach.
Stretching at Rodeo Beach
We continued back UP to the Pt Bonita Lighthouse where we took our lunch break waiting for the tunnel to be open.
Out to the lighthouse!
The most hilarious part of the day: 15 people arriving at a juncture in the trail and 15 different opinions on which way to go!  We had a few missteps navigating the “well marked trail” but it was all a part of the adventure. Thank goodness for Amanda's Verizon cell coverage so we were able to check GPS and figure out which way to go! We were all pretty exhausted at the end of the day but also elated by the accomplishment of completing a kick ass hike too. It was a whopping 15/16 mile day with 1,463 feet of climbing!

Route support!
Email info@inourlifetime.org for details if you know someone that would like to provide route support for some of our longer walks. Good sense of direction/familiarity with San Francisco are helpful. Route support will meet us at our breaks - they will carry hydration supplies, some snacks and pick up walkers who may need a lift during the walk.
