Saturday's walk route to Tank Hill & the Vulcan Stairs was selected in honor of
the end of training for the Avon walkers (and
it is Jenny G's favorite walk!) We started by walking through the AIDS Memorial Grove in Golden Gate Park which is such a beautiful, serene and sacred place.
Atop Tank Hill, from Trina |
Although the normal 300 degree view
on the top of Tank Hill was
pretty obscured by fog, but it was still a great climb and we had amazing views
out toward Potrero, SOMA and the Bay Bridge . (Did you know that until
1957 Tank Hill had a water tank? Hence, the name!)
The Vulcan Stairs, from Trina |
The Vulcan Stairs are such a gem hidden off of 17th Street – storybook houses and gorgeous gardens line the steep stairway.
It was another fabulous walk and a terrific way for the Avon Walkers to cap their training season
SF in summertime |
On Sunday 15 super hearty walkers
the first "trail walk" of the year. We hiked the Coastal Trail from
Ft Baker to Pt Bonita Lighthouse and back on a very foggy morning. We headed
out on the trail in white out fog which pretty much remained all day (somewhat
of a blessing with the LARGE hill climbs we had.) We walked up and
over toward the Marin
Headlands Visitor Center, then around the lagoon to Rodeo Beach .

Out to the lighthouse! |
The most hilarious part of the day: 15 people
arriving at a juncture in the trail and 15 different opinions on which way to
go! We had a few missteps navigating the “well marked trail” but it was
all a part of the adventure. Thank goodness for Amanda's Verizon
cell coverage so we were able to check GPS and figure out which way
to go! We were all pretty exhausted at the end of the day but also elated by
the accomplishment of completing a kick ass hike too. It was a whopping 15/16
mile day with 1,463 feet of climbing!
Route support!
Email info@inourlifetime.org for details if you know someone that
would like to provide route support for some of our longer walks. Good sense of
direction/familiarity with San
Francisco are helpful. Route support will meet us
at our breaks - they will carry hydration supplies, some snacks and pick up
walkers who may need a lift during the walk.
