The Power of Vulnerability

Saturday we gathered for a 20 mile walk that lead us on a huge circle around San Francisco. We walked though the Marina toward Aquatic Park, past Fisherman's Wharf, along the the Embarcadero to AT & T Park, into China Basin and up Potrero Hill, along through the Mission to Mission Dolores Park, through the Castro up 17th Street to Cole Valley, continuing on through the Inner Sunset, into Golden Gate Park and through the Richmond and finally back into the Presidio! This is one heck of a walk and everyone did so great!

On Sunday our Warming Hut Hotties team members who are walking in the San Francisco Komen 3 Day for the Cure, did a 20 mile walk to Tiburon!

A small, small group of 5 people who are walking in the Immediate Impact Walk did the 16 mile walk route we had completed a few weeks ago, since it is such a special walk. We started by heading through GG Park and out to Stanyan Street. From a wooden stair case between two houses we hopped onto the  Historic Trail around Mt Sutro. This trail is truly magical – quietly enveloped in fog and lush greenery. From there we pushed on to Portola Dr. - took a break at Mollie Stone’s and continued on our walk through the hidden gem Glen Canyon Park. We moseyed through the Glen Park neighborhood admiring the gardens and architecture. Then we walked through Noe Valley, the Castro, Duboce Park, the Panhandle, the Conservatory of Flowers and like cows to the barn, we headed back down Arguello to the Transit Cafe!

Tremendous thanks to our route support volunteers: Lizelle, Marsha  and Sharla for providing snacks, hydration, encouragement and rides to walkers who listened to their bodies.

Take time to recover from your hard work: continue to hydrate, stretch and eat to re-fuel your body. Use ice and ibuprofen for soreness, but if you are experiencing pain that does not subside after a few days, please go see a doctor. There is time between now and your event to make changes in hydration, nutrition and gear if you learned something is not working for you.

Treat yourself with loving kindness this week!

We have one more high mileage weekend scheduled Aug 25 & Aug 26 (with route support), for anyone who wants to get in 20 mile walk(s) before their event.

WEEKLY INSPIRATION
Whenever I have tough weeks where I have a lot of self-doubt, am critical of myself, or it seems way too many challenges have been thrown my way, I watch this Ted Talk by Brene Brown, The Power of Vulnerability. When you google her name, the following words pop up under the link: authenticity, shame, empathy, vulnerability, courage, compassion, connection. A lot of the stuff our community is about. Make a cup of tea, snuggle into a comfy chair and watch. It is powerful, powerful stuff!

"There’s always pushback when we begin to lead courageous, authentic lives. We’re going to piss off people, make people uncomfortable, and get criticized. I don’t know if I’ll ever be comfortable with disappointing people or being on the receiving end of mean-spirited criticism, but I know I can’t go back to pleasing, performing, and perfecting. Vulnerability is hard, but not as hard as regret." Brene Brown
